1. India topped the list of World Hunger list with the highest number of hungry people in the world, at 194 million, as per a United Nations annual hunger report titled ‘The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2015′. Though at the global level, the corresponding figure dropped to 795 million in 2014-15, from 1 billion in 1990-92, with East Asia led by China accounting for most of the reductions. In India, the number reduced from 210.1 million in 1990 to 194.6 million in 2015.

2. Tripura government has decided to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 from the remaining areas of the state. The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar in Agartala after Police in its latest half-yearly review had found no need to extend the act any further.

3. Famous Scientist S Christopher has been appointed as the new DRDO chief and will be in charge of the day-to-day functioning of DRDO, technology development and co-ordination with the ministry. At the same time, G Satheesh Reddy has been appointed as the Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister. He would provide critical advice to the defence minister on technology and scientific and technological aspects of new acquisitions.

With this, the government has split the two posts for the first time. The posts are DRDO Chief and Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister.

4. Retired Lt. General Nirbhay Sharma was sworn in as the Eighth Governor of Mizoram last week. He was transferred from Arunachal Pradesh and appointed Governor of Mizoram by President Pranab Mukherjee earlier this month.He replaced Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi who took additional charge of Mizoram.

5. Manabi Bandopadhyay has been appointed the first transgender principal at a college in West Bengal, which is the first in India. Manabi will assume the role of Krishnagar Women’s College principal in West Bengal in June.She is currently an associate professor in Bengali at Vivekananda Satobarshiki Mahavidyalaya.

6. India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 7.5% in the last quarter of the financial year 2014-15. The GDP growth for the entire financial year FY 2014-15 now provisionally stands at 7.3%. Indian’s economic growth in FY 2014-15 is higher compared to 6.9% GDP growth witnessed in the previous financial year of 2013-14. With this GDS growth rate, India outpaced China’s GDP growth rate.

7. Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane was awarded with the CEAT Indian Cricketer of the Year award and the Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakara bagged the International Cricketer of the Year award in the 19th edition of CEAT Awards.

The former Indian cricket captain, Kapil Dev, was conferred the International Lifetime Achievement Award. Hasim Amla won the International Batsman of the Year award while Rangana Herath won the International Bowler of the Year award.

8. Beijing Olympic medal winner Abhinav Bindra qualified for the Rio Olympics 2016 through one of the Olympic quotas. He shot 627.5 to qualify in the 10m air rifle event at the 1972 Olympic Shooting Range in Hochbrucke. With this he is now the fourth Indian shooter to qualify for Rio Games after he clinched one of the three quotas available to qualify for the games.

9. Sepp Blatter was re-elected as the President of FIFA for the fifth term amid the ongoing corruption scandal affecting football’s governing body. At the same time, FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke confirmed that Russia and Qatar will host the Football World Cups in 2018 and 2022 respectively amid.

10. Brazil’s economy contracted by 0.2% in the first quarter of the year due to severe droughts. It contracted by 0.2% compared with the previous three months which was better than economists’ expectations of 0.5% contraction. Brazil is the seventh largest economy in the world.

11. The US economy contracted by 0.7% in the first tquarter of 2015, compared to the same period last year. The US economy was last contracted in the first quarter of 2014, when it was contracted by 2.1%.

Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of US economic activity, slowed to 1.8% growth in the first quarter.
